Autumn Mist is a piano composition I wrote in 2023 for the early intermiediate pianist. Although the initial key signature is C Major, it starts on an E minor chord, giving it a decidedly modal feeling. The opening section starts predominantly with block chords with the F natural characteristic of the key signature, but unexpected in the M minor setting. This adds interest and provides the occasional chill that I associate with autumn.
The second section introduces more movement, particularly in the inner parts. The change to F Major provides contrast, but the dynamic level continues to ebb and flow similar to the opening section. The rate of forward momentum increases with the addition of left-hand triplets untill the beginning of section 3 which returns to the origial chey and ends with the return of block chords.
I would characterize this composition as meditative, suitable for any situation where you need a fairly short piece of music. I have used it as filler music in a larger set of music and also during ceremonies when I needed music while people were moving from one position to another. Sometimes I just play it for fun.
