Hail storms are nothing new here on the mountain. Last night it went to a whole new level. Around lunchtime it started raining and I heard a little bit of hail. It melted right away and I didn’t think much more about it. Last evening the storm had escalated to lots of rain, thunder, lightening, and bursts of hail that were so loud we had to use the closed captioning because we couldn’t hear the TV. It didn’t even sound like hail. Usually it is a pinging sound on the metal roof. Last night it sounded like large work boots falling from the sky. It was pretty ominous.
When I went to let the dogs out before bed it looked like it had snowed. It wasn’t snow, just a thick layer of hail everywhere. The dogs were not fans and refused to walk on it. There were still small piles of hail left over this morning, long after the rain had stopped, mostly in the raised flower beds and the shady spots.

We definitely need the moisture, and the trees and hardier plants will be pleased. But it was the last straw for my poor spring bulbs. They suffered greatly with some late spring heavy snow. And now the pelting of the hail left them ragged. I doubt I’ll get any blooms this year. Oh well, that’s mountain life.
And now…..its doing it again. Good thing I haven’t planted my vegetable garden yet.
