I have always loved animals and felt a strong connection to them. There are stories of me singing to a box turtle as a child to get it to come out of its shell. I’ve always had at least one dog and also used to have a dream of becoming a zookeeper. I spent hours watching the polar bears at the Columbus Zoo, and I was ecstatic when I went through the Penguin Encounter at the Newport Aquarium with my daughter-in-law and actually got to meet some of the penguins. On a trip to Washington, DC, I spent an entire day at the National Zoo watching the pandas.
On a different level I’ve been attracted, as have so many other people, to animals in the media. I feel a kinship with the Winnie the Pooh characters and adore The Jungle Book, The Lion King, and other animated classics. I grew up with TV shows such as Lassie, Flipper, and Rin Tin Tin. In both my personal life and in my favorite media, animals have always been present.
Certain animals stand out as being lifelong objects of fascination, including polar bears, pandas, Canada geese, dogs, wolves, and hawks. I have also had strong aversions to spiders, most insects, opossums, and sharks. Other animals became important to me for shorter periods of time. I was once obsessed with frogs, and another time, it was turtles. For me, these were times of total immersion, and I now know that these animals had a message or something to teach me at that time in my life.
During my adult years, I met my dear friend Zach, who introduced me to the basics of Shamansm and totem animals. I was already aware of the Chinese Zodia, some Egyptian mythology, and some Celtic symbology. This prepared me to more fully understand the connection between animal behavior, animal totems, and human existence. I have found comfort listening to the guidance of my totem animals and that of other animals that wander in and out of my life.
When I was writing Tap It Away: 10 Minutes to Freedom with EFT, I decided to utilize some ofwhat I knew about totem animals to write a chapter called “Animal Wisdom.” My purpose was to demonstrate how tapping doesn’t have to be a stern and serious endeavor in order to get more work done. I also wanted to illustrate how challenges don’t always need to be tackled head-on. It was perhaps the most enjoyable chapter that I write. I decided then that I would someday write another book that was entirely dedicated to tapping with totem animal characteristics. Unleash Your Primal Power is a product of that long-ago decision.
